Jeff Davis show at May's First Friday

Tempe artist, Jeff Davis, will be unveiling his latest show "Rectangle Studies & Color Palettes." at the A. E. England Gallery. Opening reception held on First Friday, May 4th from 6-10 pm.


Similar to the line and color studies of Piet Mondrian and Josef Albers, Davis uses modern technology utilizing Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create digital C-Prints that are arresting in their simplicity. This exhibition presents his recent rectangle study and color palette series, both propelled by a desire to reduce compositions and ideas to an uncomplicated aesthetic conclusion. The concepts behind his artwork stem from his undergraduate studies in mathematics and studio art at Lawrence University.


Davis has his M. F. A. in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has exhibited his work throughout the United States including: Colorado, California, New York, and Pennsylvania. He serves as the Program Director for Art Foundations at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh - Online Division.

This Friday, January 7th, is the inaugural First Friday of 2011. One of our favorite photographers, John Wagner, will have a show of his work at the After Hours Gallery entitled SALT. All the photos were taken at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speed Week in 2010. Congrats on the show, John!



26 Blocks show moves to Cityscape

Tomorrow, October 1st, the monthly First Friday Artwalk will be held in downtown Phoenix. The 26 Blocks project, that we were privledged to print, has found a new home in the CityScape lobby as part of the show's 2010 tour. The opening night festivities will be held from 6-10 pm in the Main Tower Lobby. If you could not make the other showings of the 26 Blocks project this is a great opportunity to experience first hand the collaborative efforts of 26 local Phoenix photographers and writers, highlighting 26 city blocks of downtown Phoenix, and their resulting images and stories.

26 Blocks opening next week

In just over a week the opening show for the 26 Blocks project will debut. The unveiling of the show will be May 7th at the After Hours Gallery downtown as part of the First Friday art walk. It has been a fun project to be a part of, and exciting to see it all come together. We hope to see you there!

PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 27, 2010) - Prepare to be amazed. The riveting 26 Blocks project is complete and ready for its debut at the premier May 7, 2010 at After Hours Gallery. This unique project was a collaboration of 52 of metropolitan Phoenix's most talented writers and photographers and one sculptor/painter working together to promote downtown Phoenix.

"The unveiling of this project comes at a perfect time," said Joey Robert Parks, 26 Blocks founder. "Phoenix is at the center of a lot of controversy right now. With the forefront of social media chatter focused on talk about boycotting Arizona, we're thrilled to promote Phoenix in a highly positive way that encourages everyone to look at their city from very different perspectives."

The endeavor, 26 Blocks, is an art project - an intriguing union of ideas, civic perspectives and artists - featuring 26 blocks of the downtown Phoenix area; each block photographed and written about in a way that captures the most intriguing aspects of the culture and/or past, present or imagined future of each block.

Local Phoenix writer Joey Robert Parks posed the question 'What would happen if you asked 26 of the best photographers and writers to capture the essence of a single city block?'. The endeavor to answer this question is the creation of the 26 Blocks project. The project pairs 52 local writers and photographers given the task to focus on a selected city block in downtown Phoenix. Continuing with the theme of building blocks, since there are 26 letters in the alphabet, there are 26 city blocks selected for the project. The blocks chosen completely at random, and the writers and photographers paired together were organized alphabetically, to ensure no bias or predisposition to their assigned area.

This week each pair's city block was revealed. The artists are encouraged to learn more about the history and vibe of that block, and out of what they discover to express their perspective through one key image and/or story. The conclusion of the project will debut at the After Hours Gallery on May 7th, then go on a 6 month tour.

A very interesting concept that collaborates a group of talented creative people and immerses them in their community. Everyone here is excited to see the results. Artisan Colour is happy to play a part in this unique project by printing the photographic images for the show. 50th Anniversary First Friday Party at PAM

On December 4th the monthly First Friday Artwalk will be held in the Downtown Phoenix Art District. The Phoenix Art Museum has also selected that day to mark the beginning of their 50th anniversary celebrations. Their 50th Anniversary First Friday Party is open to the public and promises to be a multi sensory experience. Not only will the PAM be showcasing 50 new acquisitions from notable artists like Andy Warhol, Phillip C. Curtis, James Turrell, and more, they will also have live bands, DJ's, as well as hors d'oeuvres and cocktails. The new artwork will eventually be distributed around the different galleries in the museum. Through January 3, 2010 they will be on display in the Steele Gallery. Come out and help the Phoenix Art Museum celebrate 50 years of cultural enrichment in The Valley of the Sun.

50th Anniversary First Friday Party

Everyone in the Valley is invited to celebrate Phoenix Art Museum's Golden Anniversary at a free First Friday event, December 4, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Since 1959, the Museum has served as the cornerstone of Phoenix's art and cultural community, providing the people of Arizona with great art from around the world and amazing cultural experiences. The 50th Anniversary party promises to be no exception offering a jam-packed evening full of engaging musical performances, live DJ sets, signature cocktails and access to all of the Museum's galleries.
